August is the plateau. Water is at or near its warmest, weed and algae are at their peak, and most fish have already bred and are simply eating to build reserves. The pattern is consistent: poor through the middle of the day, good at dawn and dusk, and often best of all after dark.

What the water is doing
There is little change to work with, which makes August a month of routine rather than of opportunities. Fish hold in comfortable, oxygen-rich ground, feed on the move at either end of the day, and ignore almost everything in between. The anglers who do well are the ones who accept that.
On the bank, look for
- Baitfish tell the story. Where small fish are being pushed towards the surface or into the margin, predators are close and active.
- Algae-stained water hides your line. Where the water is green, you can fish a heavier leader than in June and get away with it.
- Watch for weed die-back in the shallows. Where weed is rotting off, oxygen drops and fish move away from that ground.

Surface lures, topwater and float-fished baits all improve sharply as the sun drops. A head torch and a camp lamp are worth carrying in August.
Scale down after the spawn
Post-spawn fish are often in poorer condition and take a smaller, slower bait than they did in June, even of the same species.
Move more than you would in spring
Fish in August are spread through the water and holding in comfortable ground. Covering water and finding them beats waiting for them to come to one swim.

- Hot spots, algae and low water all peak in August. Fish carefully and land fish quickly - a long fight in warm water is dangerous for the fish.
