Method

How to tie the alberto knot

  1. 1Double the end of the leader back on itself for 10–15cm to form a loop.
  2. 2Pass the braid tag end through the doubled loop and pin the loop with your fingers.
  3. 3Wrap the braid tightly around all three strands of the doubled loop, working down towards the closed end, for 12–15 tight turns.
  4. 4Reverse direction and wrap back up over the first layer of turns for several more wraps, still keeping them snug.
  5. 5Pass the braid tag end back through the loop near where it entered.
  6. 6Moisten and pull the leader and braid firmly to bed the wraps down, then trim both tag ends.

Work on a flat surface with enough line in your hand to pull the knot down firmly, and check the wraps sit neatly before you trim anything away.

  • Quicker and more forgiving to tie than an FG knot while still being a low-bulk join
  • Handles a doubled, heavier leader well

  • Slightly bulkier than an FG knot, though still far slimmer than a uni-to-uni join
  • Wraps must stay tight and even through both layers or the knot can slip under sustained pressure
