Why does my line keep tangling on the cast?
Most tangles on a spinning outfit come from slack line loading loosely onto the spool, not from bad luck with the wind.

Run these before changing anything
- Is there slack in the line the moment before you start the next cast?
- Does the spool sit right at, above, or noticeably below the lip line?
- Do tangles happen only in wind, or also on still days?
Most likely causes, in order
Slack line went onto the spool between casts
Check by watching what happens to the line right after a cast lands: if you don't reel up snug before the next cast, that slack lies loose on the spool and pays off in an uncontrolled loop next time. Always wind up tight before casting again.
The spool is overfilled or underfilled
Look at the line level against the spool lip. Line piled above the lip springs off in loops the moment the bail opens; line well below the lip catches on the lip edge on the way out. Respool to sit a couple of millimetres under the lip.
Casting into or across a strong wind with no adjustment
If tangles mostly happen on windy days, the wind is catching a slack loop mid-flight. Cast a shade harder and lower to keep the line tighter in the air, and consider a heavier lure or lead that cuts through the wind better.
Line laid on unevenly when it was spooled
If tangles happen even on calm days with tight technique, pull line off by hand and check for uneven, soft patches. That points to a respooling job, not a casting fix.

Is this the same as backlash?
No. Backlash is specific to baitcasting reels where the spool keeps spinning after the lure stops. This is about slack line and spool level on spinning reels, though a badly loaded baitcasting spool causes its own tangles too.
How do I clear a bad tangle without cutting the line?
Stop, don't pull it tighter. Open the bail, ease the loops apart by hand from the outside in, and only wind back on once it's fully free.
Does braid tangle more than monofilament?
Braid has less memory so it tangles differently — often in a single big overrun rather than lots of small loops — but an overfilled or underfilled spool causes problems with either.
