Method

How to tie the perfection loop

  1. 1Form a small first loop by crossing the tag end over the standing line, with the tag pointing away from you.
  2. 2Wrap the tag end around the standing line and bring it back across the front of the first loop, forming a second, larger loop in front of it.
  3. 3Pass the tag end behind the first loop and push it down through the second loop.
  4. 4Hold the second loop and pull the standing line to draw the first loop through it, moistening before the final pull.
  5. 5Pull steadily until the knot seats, then trim the tag end.

Work on a flat surface with enough line in your hand to pull the knot down firmly, and check the wraps sit neatly before you trim anything away.

Why it works

  • Pulls in line with the standing part rather than at an angle, which is why it is the standard leader-butt loop
  • Neat and low-bulk when tied correctly

Where it lets you down

  • The sequence of loops is easy to get backwards on a first attempt — practise before relying on it on the bank
  • Not intended for braid or as a lure loop knot
