How the rig works
Unlike all other methods, the line provides the casting weight. That lets you present tiny imitations of insects delicately, and drift them at the same speed as the current so they look natural.
Bluegill behaviour
Insects, larvae, worms and small crustaceans. Small mouths — they nibble rather than engulf.
Ponds, lakes and slow rivers near weed beds, docks and shallow cover.
When to fish it
Warm months; spawning beds in shallow water during late spring and early summer.
Bluegill tips
- Go small — a size 8 or 10 hook with a piece of worm catches far more than a whole worm.
- Long-shank hooks are easier to remove from small, deep-hooked fish.
- A small popper on a light fly rod is an excellent summer method.
