How to fish a method feeder

What this skill is for
A method feeder dumps its load of groundbait in one place as it lands, leaving the hookbait sitting on top of the feeding fish. It works because you can present a bait exactly where you have placed feed, again and again, at a distance a float could not reach.
What you need
- A method feeder mould and groundbait that holds together under the cast.
- A short, stiff rod with a quivertip that shows a bite.
- A hooklength and a hookbait that floats or balances.
- A marker buoy or a fixed feature to cast at.
Step by step
- 01
Load the mould
Press groundbait firmly around the feeder so it survives the cast, then shape it smooth. A loose mould falls off mid-flight.

Present the hookbait
Dip the hookbait into a dry mix so it sits proud on top of the feed rather than buried inside it.

Cast to a mark
Pick a clear target — a buoy, a tree, a change in the bank — and swing out to it every cast. Feeding fish to the wrong spot is the fastest way to a blank.

Take up the slack
Swing the rod tip to the water and wind until the line just tightens. Too much slack and the bite never reaches the tip.

Watch the tip
A method bite is usually a steady pull-over or a sharp shunt, not a flicker.

Replenish on a rhythm
Recast at a steady interval even without bites, so the feeding zone is continuously topped up.
Where it goes wrong
- Casting to a different spot each time.

- Groundbait too dry, so it falls off the cast.
- A hookbait that sinks into the feed and disappears.
- Leaving slack between casts so bites never register.
