Spring
After ice-out lake trout feed near the surface and along shorelines — the easiest time to reach them.
Summer
Drop below the thermocline into deep cold water; deep trolling or vertical jigging.
Autumn
Move shallow over rocky reefs to spawn; many waters restrict fishing during this period.
Winter
A classic ice-fishing target in northern lakes.

Seasons are for temperate Northern Hemisphere waters; in the Southern Hemisphere spring falls around September–November. Latitude, altitude and each year's weather shift timing. Closed seasons and size limits vary — always check local rules.
