Spring

Summer
Mostly a boat fish over wrecks and reefs in deeper, cooler water.
Autumn
Codling return inshore as the sea cools, especially after autumn storms.
Winter
Main shore season in the UK and northern Europe, often best after dark.

Seasons are for temperate Northern Hemisphere waters; in the Southern Hemisphere spring falls around September–November. Latitude, altitude and each year's weather shift timing. Closed seasons and size limits vary - always check local rules.
