How to spool a baitcasting reel
Load a baitcasting spool evenly and to the right depth so it turns freely without burying line into the layers below.

What this skill is for
A baitcasting spool spins, so line has to lie flat and firm across the whole width. A high spot or a loose section snags on the level wind or digs into the layers beneath, and that is where backlash and snapped line come from.
What you need
- Baitcasting reel
- New line
- Line clippers
- A damp cloth
- Screwdriver or your thumb for the spool lock
Step by step
- 01
Open the reel
Release the side plate or spool lock and take the spool out. Note any washers or shims on the axle and put them somewhere you will find them again — losing one changes the spool's alignment.

Anchor the line
Thread the line through the level wind and tie it to the spool with an arbor knot or a uni knot through the spool hole. Moisten, tighten slowly, trim the tag.

Keep tension with your thumb
Rest your thumb lightly on the spool while you wind. That is the same thumb that will control a cast later, so get used to the pressure now.

Wind evenly across the spool
Turn the handle at a steady pace and check every few turns that line is crossing the spool evenly. If it piles on one side, check the line is feeding straight off the supply spool and that the washers went back on.

Stop at the right depth
Fill until the line is a couple of millimetres below the spool edge. With braid especially, an overfilled spool lets the top layer cut down into the layers underneath and lock up mid-cast.

Reassemble and test
Put the spool back, close the reel, and pull line off by hand. It should come off with smooth, even resistance and the level wind should walk side to side without jumping.
Where it goes wrong
- Overfilling, then fighting buried braid all session.
- Losing a washer, so the spool sits off-centre and stacks line to one side.
- Winding with no tension and getting a soft spool that backlashes on the first cast.
- Using the star drag as a braking system while winding — it does nothing for spool control.
