How to clean and store your outfit
Rinse off salt and silt, dry the guides, and store rods and reels so they still work next season.

What this skill is for
Reels don't die of old age, they die of grit. Salt corrodes bearings in days, river silt turns a drag sticky, and a wet reel left in a bag grows the kind of mould you can't clean off. Five minutes at the car is cheaper than any repair.
What you need
- A bucket of fresh water
- A soft cloth
- A drying rack or a shaded wall hook
- A dry storage box
Step by step
- 01
Wipe the rod and guides
Run a damp cloth down the blank and around every guide, especially where line sits in the ring. Guides collect a dark ring of grit that saws line on every cast.

Rinse the reel gently
A light rinse or a wipedown with fresh water is enough on the outside. Never aim a jet at close range into the spool or handle bearings — it drives water and grit in where they do the damage.

Dry it properly
Leave the reel open and the spool hanging so trapped water can leave, and dry the outfit fully before it goes away. A damp reel in a closed bag is the fastest way to a seized spool.

Ease the drag before storage
Back the drag off so the washes aren't compressed for months at a time. A drag spring left tight all winter loses the pressure it was set to.

Store rods flat or hanging
Rods are strongest along their length and weakest where they're bent or leaning. Store them horizontal on a rack, or hanging by the butt, and never leave a rigged rod leaning against a leg of a chair.

Keep line out of heat and sun
Ultraviolet and heat weaken monofilament and cook the lubricant out of braid. Store spooled reels out of the sun, and don't leave an outfit on a rear parcel shelf.

- Putting a wet reel straight back in its bag.
- Storing a rigged rod under load so it takes a set.
- Never opening a reel for a clean until the handle grinds.
